foundations of health.

I remember when I started to become interested in nutrition & movement and it was so overwhelming.
Naturopathic medicine utilises treatment methods and medicines that apply the least possible intervention necessary for a person's needs at the time of treatment.
Dietary and lifestyle changes may seem simple when recommended by a naturopath or other health care practitioner, but it is these basics that help build a strong foundation of health without any harmful side effects, plus they are generally free and easily adapted into everyday life!
Here are my TOP TEN DAILY HABITS that you can implement easily in your life to improve energy, support optimal health and make you feel good!
1. SLEEP - Aim to get 7-9 hours of sleep every night. Good sleep hygiene practices can help get you get the sleep you need to feel good - no screens or large meals 2 hours before bed and a comfortable and quiet sleep environment are a good place to start.
2. PROTEIN - Consuming approximately 20 grams of quality lean protein with every meal (3-4 times daily) to help energy production, immune health and general wellbeing.
3. WATER - Hydration is important for brain function, digestion and to keep our skin glowing! Aim to drink 2-3L of water daily (not including juice & tea).
4. BREAKFAST - The most important meal of the day! Setting yourself up with a nutrient dense and protein rich breakfast is important to stabilise blood sugar and energy levels throughout the day. Sorry, but coffee is not breakfast!
5. MOVEMENT - Moving your body should be a celebration of your health, not a punishment for eating. Find your thing - whether it be yoga, pilates, running, cycling, swimming, dancing, walking, weights, hiking, martial arts, whatever makes you feel good!
6. MODERATION - Everything in moderation! Eat the chocolate, have a lazy afternoon on the couch, do the the things that may not be considered 'healthy' but make your soul feel good - in moderation of course.
7. COLOUR - Adding colour to your plate helps increase your intake of different vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Aim to include 2-3 different colours into each meal.
8. NATURE - Spending time in nature has been shown to improve so many aspects of our lives. Simply getting outside can reduce your stress levels and improve your mental health and sleep. Simply getting some sun on skin (safely), walking barefoot on the ground, swimming the ocean, lakes or rivers or walking in nature regularly can support your physical and mental wellbeing.
9. SELF-CARE - You can't pour from an empty cup. Remember to rest, do things you enjoy and spend time with the people you love.
10. MINDFULNESS - We live in a busy world and live busy lives, take some time out to empty your mind and focus on your breath. A good place to start is by taking 100 conscious breaths a day, you may like to break them up into 25 breaths 4 times a day, 10 breaths 10 times a day or all 100 at once. Take the time to slow your mind and notice the rise and fall of your chest with every breath.
Health doesn't have to be complicated, confusing or expensive, sometimes it's the smallest and simplest habits that can make the biggest difference to our wellbeing.
